It’s time to dust off your Black Power Gloves and Thugnificent mixtapes, because Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks is coming back for a brand new show.

On Wednesday,  Variety reported that Sony Pictures Animation was working on a “reimagining” of the satirical cartoon, scheduled to be released in 2020. Many fans were hesitant upon hearing about the hard reboot due to the poorly received season 4 that was released without creator Aaron McGruder behind the wheel. However, Sony also revealed that they would also be bringing back McGruder as creative director in order to bring the show to life.

Long time Boondocks fans will remember the adventures of Huey, Riley, and Robert “Grandad” Freeman as they navigate the nuances of white & Black America from their recently purchased upper middle class house in the fictional town of Woodcrest, Maryland.

Studio executives described the plot for the reboot as the Freeman’s battle against their archenemy Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating older black man who serves as the contrarian conservative black perspective to Grandad, Riley and especially Huey’s pro-black rhetoric. In the original series, Uncle Ruckus was a secondary character that served mainly as a fly on the wall to the boy’s antics, but this time he runs the local Woodcrest Government with an ashy iron fist. Huey and Riley can be expected to fight the power in ways that are “topical and radical.”

There is no release date yet, but it was confirmed by actor John Witherspoon himself on Joe Rogen’s podcast that he will be reprising his role as Grandad for the reboot.

It is unknown whether or not Regina King will be reprising her role as both Huey and Riley, in the show’s hiatus she has won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, as well as signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix. Hopefully, she’ll have some time in her schedule to bring two of the three main characters to life once again.
